Thumbelina

Lucy M. George's retelling of the Andersen classic stays gentle and true to its source: tiny Thumbelina is kidnapped by a toad, pressured by a mole, and finally freed by a swallow who carries her to a warm land where she belongs. Rachel Swirles's illustrations do the best work here, capturing Thumbelina's smallness against an oversized world in a way that makes the belonging theme land emotionally for young listeners. The honest caveat is length — this runs longer than most picture books, and the repeated near-forced-marriage plot beats may prompt questions you'll want to be ready for. But the tone stays kind throughout, and the resolution is satisfying. A worthy introduction to a classic fairy tale for patient listeners aged three and up.
