Staples's cockney warmth and her ability to weave domestic life into the anxieties of wartime Britain are genuinely appealing, and fans of the Adams Family saga describe the series as exactly the kind of comfort read that keeps them coming back across 20-plus volumes. The honest catch is that this is volume sixteen — if you haven't read the first fifteen, the emotional weight of a child echoing 'earlier chapters' or learning Tim is a POW simply won't land. A lovely series to start from the beginning, but not an entry point.
