James Gunn is a SFWA Grandmaster and the ambition behind this Transcendental Machine trilogy is clear, but the critics who followed all three volumes are consistent: the trilogy declined with each book, and this final entry is the weakest — with an abrupt ending and a central concept that largely disappears. Clean content and classic space opera spirit count for something, but the execution does not land.
