Janet Cleland's warm watercolors do real work here, and the separation-and-reunion arc is one young children genuinely connect with. But Kirkus's criticism of the rhyme scheme is hard to dismiss — inconsistent rhythm is noticeable even to young listeners, and the storytelling leans on telling rather than showing. Koontz's affection for his dogs is clear; the craft of picture-book writing is less so.
