Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Laura Hillenbrand · 2010
🎙 Narrated by Edward Herrmann
84/100
👍 Worth It

This is one of those books that earns every bit of its reputation — Zamperini's story of survival, cruelty, and eventual grace is devastating and beautiful in equal measure. Just know going in that the POW camp chapters are graphic, so this is one for older teens and adults, not casual family listening. Edward Herrmann's narration is quietly masterful and lets the story carry its own weight, so the audio is absolutely worth the listen.

✦ Penny’s Take — this is The Review Group’s own editorial assessment. Penny’s analytical review line researched this book from real sources and scored it across the lenses shown below. It’s an honest first-party read — not a page-by-page personal one. The gold ✓ Penny Tested mark is reserved for books Penny reads cover to cover herself.
⚠ Parent note — our reviewers flagged: Graphic, extended wartime violence and torture — recommend mature teen (14+) and adult listeners only, not younger family listening. We still scored it 84; these are context for your family, not an automatic skip.

🎙 Narration: excellent Edward Herrmann's award-winning narration (AudioFile Earphones Award, 2012 Audie finalist) is restrained and precise, letting the story speak for itself.
