Unconditional Parenting

Alfie Kohn's core argument — that conditional approval teaches children their worth is earned rather than inherent — is backed by real developmental psychology and has pushed a generation of parents to examine reflexes they inherited without questioning. The weaknesses are real: the book is much better at dismantling conventional approaches than at building concrete replacements, and the condemnation of all praise overstates the evidence. Read it to be challenged, not for a to-do list.
