The definitive English-language scholarly edition of Vitoria's political writings — On the American Indians and On the Law of War alone justify the volume's place in any political philosophy or international law collection. Pagden and Lawrance's editorial apparatus is first-rate, and for its intended audience of academic scholars, this is simply the standard text. Dense scholastic argumentation makes it inaccessible outside that audience, but within it, it is essential.
