A genuinely clever anthology that uses the Martian invasion as a lens through which historical giants like Einstein, Twain, and Roosevelt witness catastrophe — and the roster of contributors (Silverberg, Connie Willis, Benford, Brin) ensures real literary firepower behind the conceit. Quality is uneven across 18 stories as any anthology will be, and you'll get more from it if you recognize the historical figures. For Wells fans or anyone who loves inventive SF pastiche, this is a fun, substantive read.
