By Book 5 in a series Hanks has developed a real sense of community and accumulated emotional stakes that reward loyal readers — the Oregon Coast setting is vivid and the ongoing character relationships give the romance genuine weight. For readers already invested in Basalt Bay this is exactly what they are looking for. The catch is that this essentially requires reading the prior four books first, making it a poor entry point and limiting its reach. Worth it for the intended audience, not for newcomers.
