We Were Liars is a prestige YA mystery built around an unreliable narrator, a wealthy New England island family, and a twist ending that earned it starred reviews and a Goodreads Choice Award. Cadence returns to the Sinclair family's private island two summers after a traumatic event she cannot remember, and what she pieces together is genuinely devastating. Lockhart's prose is lyrical and the social critique of inherited privilege is sharp and earned. That said, this is firmly 16-and-up territory: underage drinking, Percocet use, suicidal ideation, and heavy grief themes are woven through the story. Families seeking clean content should pass. For the right older reader it lands hard, but the mature content is not incidental β€” it's central to the book.
