Loftus brings something unusual to the deconversion genre: real theological training and a willingness to engage Christian doctrine on its own terms rather than just dismissing it. The expanded 2012 edition's direct engagement with critics strengthens the arguments noticeably. It is a demanding read — the blend of memoir and philosophical argument is sometimes uneven — and faith communities will rightly find it challenging, but for readers genuinely wrestling with these questions it is one of the more substantive books in its lane.
