Self-help ✦ Penny’s Take
Why We Took the Car
Wolfgang Herrndorf · 2014
80/100
👍 Worth It
Herrndorf's road-trip novel is the real thing — a literary coming-of-age story that earned comparisons to Salinger and Twain because it actually earns them, not just because a publicist said so. The writing is authentic, funny, and genuinely moving, and the German Children's Literature Award plus two million copies sold are not accidents. Parental alcoholism, mild profanity, and one brief topless scene make this one for older teens and adults rather than younger readers, but for that audience it is a genuine find.
