Series ✦ Penny’s Take
With an Ambulance During the Franco-German War
Charles E. Ryan · 2017
75/100
👍 Worth It
Charles Ryan's memoir is a rare thing — a firsthand account that saw both sides of the Franco-Prussian War, operating with wounded Frenchmen and then visiting Prussian headquarters, all while performing surgery under fire. The Victorian prose takes some patience, but the compassion and detail Ryan brings to his account of what battlefield medicine looked like in 1870 make it genuinely rewarding for military and medical historians. Freely available via Project Gutenberg is a meaningful bonus.
