Zvi Bodie is a Boston University finance professor, and this 2003 book with Michael Clowes delivers a rigorous, genuinely contrarian argument: stocks are not as safe as conventional wisdom claims, and most investors are dangerously overexposed to equities. The recommended alternative — centering portfolios on TIPS and I Bonds for retirement and college savings — is academically grounded and thought-provoking even if you disagree. The honest caveat is that history has complicated the thesis: post-2003 TIPS yields fell dramatically, which undermined the very math the strategy depends on. The book also dismisses long-run equity research more quickly than many economists would accept. Read it as a valuable challenge to complacency, not as a turnkey plan.
