1, 2, 3 to the Zoo

👍 Worth It

Eric Carle's debut picture book is as good as picture-book debuts get. One elephant, two hippos, three giraffes — the animals board a train in groups as the count climbs to ten, all rendered in Carle's unmistakable torn-collage style. The near-wordless format is its greatest strength and its one honest limitation. Young children across all language backgrounds can follow the visual logic easily, but parents looking for rich text to read aloud will find almost nothing here. The dramatic gatefold at the end — all animals together at the zoo — is a genuine payoff that young readers reliably love. As an introduction to counting and as an introduction to Carle, this slim classic earns every bit of its long-in-print reputation. Entirely wholesome and ideal for any family shelf.
