10,000 Days of Thunder

Philip Caputo · 2011
75/100
👍 Worth It

Philip Caputo — Pulitzer Prize winner and Vietnam veteran — wrote this Vietnam War history for young readers, and his firsthand authority shows on every page. The title's reference to roughly 10,000 days of continuous warfare frames a conflict that spanned French colonialism through the fall of Saigon, and Caputo covers it through short essays, maps, photographs, and human profiles that include tunnel rats, nurses, journalists, and Vietnamese villagers on both sides. Kirkus called it the most complete overview for young readers at its publication. The honest caveat: some war photography is graphic, the Agent Orange and My Lai sections are handled responsibly but soberly, and Caputo provides no source notes for his many quotations despite relying on oral histories. Recommended for ages ten and up with a parent nearby for younger readers.
