A Brief History of Western Civilization

Kishlansky, Geary, and O'Brien wrote a textbook that actually reads like one in the best sense: organized, balanced, integrating political, social, cultural, and economic history without letting any single thread dominate. The visual program of maps and images is a genuine classroom asset, and the decision to place Western history in global context throughout was ahead of its time for a survey text. This is a book that does its job well. The honest caveat is that it was designed for college-level Western Civilization survey courses and does that specific job — it's not narrative history for general readers, and the 2002 edition has been superseded by later editions and newer texts for anyone selecting course materials today. If you're in that course or teaching it with older materials, this is solid. General readers should look elsewhere.
