A is for Apple

Tiger Tales and illustrator Georgie Birkett keep things refreshingly simple here. Every page of this 2011 board book gives a toddler three things to do: trace a grooved letter with one finger, lift a flap to find a surprise, and connect a bright picture to a familiar word. That triple engagement — tracing, flipping, looking — is genuinely smart design for the youngest learners, and the board-book format is built to survive small hands. The trade-off is that there is no story here at all; this is a tool, not a tale, so kids who want characters and plot will need something else alongside it. As a first-steps literacy companion, though, it does its job well and the format holds up to daily use.
