HarperFestival's 2005 board-book condensation of Burnett's 1905 classic does one important thing: it puts Sara Crewe in tiny hands years before a child is ready for the full novel. Sara's story — wealthy girl loses everything, keeps her dignity, finds her way back — carries genuinely beautiful themes of inner resilience and kindness that translate even at a preschool level. The limitation is inherent to the format: heavy condensation strips out the emotional richness that makes the original so powerful, and very young children will grasp the surface of the story more than its depth. Think of it as planting a seed. When those children are older and ready for the real book, they will already feel at home with Sara.
