Emily's journey from Birmingham seamstress to London activist includes imprisonment and forced feeding, depicted with historical honesty and emotional weight appropriate for teen readers. The class tensions — between Emily and the upper-class suffragettes who recruit her — add a layer of nuance that lifts this above standard historical fiction. A Guardian Children's Fiction Prize commendation is a meaningful credential. The caveat for parents is that the forced-feeding scenes are frank; they are not gratuitous, but younger or more sensitive readers may find them difficult. For curriculum use alongside suffragette history, this remains a sharp and empathetic choice.
