Gail Popp's autobiographical warmth and the specificity of 1943 Appalachian farm life give this book genuine charm, and the faith woven through the grandfather's preacher background feels natural rather than heavy-handed. But self-published, unedited, and at 72 pages stuck between formats, it lacks the polish and discoverability to compete with stronger historical middle-grade titles.
