A Whisper and a Wish

Book two of the Christy Miller series puts Christy in California, starting over socially before sophomore year while her parents hold a firm no-dating line and Todd is still on her mind. The new social landscape feels real — the complicated popular girl Brittany, the slumber party mishap, the late-night adventure that brushes close to trouble. The eating disorder subplot involving a friend is handled with care and age-appropriate sensitivity, which is more than many YA novels of any era manage. The faith message is clear and genuinely integrated rather than preachy: God can be trusted no matter where life takes you. The honest caveat is that some of the late-1990s setting details will feel dated to modern teen readers, and a police-station subplot wraps up a little too neatly. Still, for Christian teen girls, this is warm, honest, and worth reading.
