Adventure Stories
Clive King, best known for Stig of the Dump, curated this anthology with an informed eye for what young readers actually find gripping. The lineup is genuinely impressive β Ray Bradbury, Rosemary Sutcliff, Doris Lessing, Mark Twain, Jill Paton Walsh β and the mix of historical adventure, science fiction, and coming-of-age stories keeps the collection from feeling one-note. The literary quality is consistently high. The honest caveat is the nature of any anthology: pacing is uneven by definition, some pieces will land better than others, and a few of the older selections may feel remote to contemporary children. Finding it in print takes effort. But for a nine-to-fourteen-year-old who is ready to range across genres and decades, this is an excellent introduction to adventure literature's big voices.
