The early chapter-book format is well-suited to kindergarten through grade 3 readers, the dog-and-friendship premise is genuinely appealing, and the illustrations support readers who are still building confidence on the page. The honest caveat comes from Kirkus, which found the book slight and silly, with character voices that don't quite distinguish themselves and dialogue that falls short of Komaiko's picture-book work.
