Louis Hoover's 1961 Davis Publications guide was written for early childhood educators and parents working with children ages 3 to 6, and it earned foundational status in art education literature that still earns it mentions from art educators more than six decades later. The developmental approach — activities calibrated for where 3-to-6-year-olds actually are with fine motor skills and attention — is what makes it worth revisiting even now. The activity-by-activity format is practical enough for educators without specialized art training to use directly. The honest caveats are significant: the book is long out of print and access is limited to used copies, and some materials or recommended methods from 1961 may no longer be considered appropriate or safe for young children. Worth finding for its approach, but verify any materials guidance against current early childhood standards.
