Babar to the Rescue

Cathy West's 1989 picture book adaptation of Babar: The Movie tells how young Babar rallied the elephants — with help from the monkey Zephir — to rescue Celeste and her mother from the rhino warlord Rataxes, who had enslaved the elephant villagers to build a rhino city. The story hits the franchise's core values of courage, leadership, and community, compressed into an accessible format for early readers. Mild peril (slavery, conquering villains) is handled gently and with a satisfying resolution, consistent with the animated film. Without the film as context, though, the narrative feels thin, and the book is long out of print, mostly found on secondary markets. A solid pick for young Babar fans or families who love the film.
