Big Bear's Treasury, the Blue Collection

Candlewick Press assembled an impressive roster for this 1994 anthology — Martin Waddell, Helen Oxenbury, John Burningham, Michael Rosen with Quentin Blake, Jill Murphy — making it an excellent introduction to the best of British children's literature from that era. For libraries and families with children spanning preschool to early elementary, the wide age range is a genuine asset. Publishers Weekly noted the quality of the author-illustrator lineup, and the Candlewick production values hold up. The honest caveat is that there's no unifying thread: selections were largely previously published, and the anthology's identity is more brand showcase than curated collection. Limited information on the exact table of contents makes it hard to evaluate individual selections. As a gift anthology or library purchase, it's a reliable if loosely assembled introduction to its era's best.
