Big Dog and Little Dog

Dav Pilkey Β· 1997
91/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

The original 1997 Pilkey picture book that started it all sets the tone for the whole series: two dogs, simple daily adventures, short repetitive sentences, and an undercurrent of generosity and tolerance that gives the minimal text more emotional weight than it first appears. Nearly three decades of reissues β€” Green Light Readers, My First I Can Read, board book formats β€” tell you all you need to know about staying power. Educators and parents consistently recommend it as an excellent choice for early readers. The caveat is the same one that applies to the whole series: plot is nearly absent, and the book reads in under two minutes. Buy the whole set if you can, because the real value is in having multiple titles to return to.
