The counting-in-quantities approach is this book's real contribution: rather than drilling 1-to-10, it asks young readers to think about numbers as groupings, which is meaningfully more ambitious. Kirkus and Publishers Weekly both gave it starred reviews; it also won a Mathical Award for inspiring a love of math. The rhyming text is energetic and read-aloud-friendly, and Cyrus's detailed illustrations let readers find the same three characters recurring across every scene. The honest caveat is that the construction setting, while broadly appealing, is well-trodden picture-book territory, and the educational scaffolding is visible enough to feel didactic. Still, for a math-forward picture book, this one earns its awards.
