πŸ‘ Worth It

Anna Sewell wrote this novel in the last years of her life, unable to leave her bed, dictating a story that would sell over 50 million copies and help change how working horses were treated in Victorian England. Told entirely from Black Beauty's perspective, it follows him from a happy foal on a good farm through owners both kind and brutal β€” each chapter a small lesson in how human character shows up in the way we treat those who cannot speak for themselves. The virtues here are patience, compassion, and resilience, delivered not as sermons but as lived experience. Younger or reluctant readers may find the Victorian pacing slow, and some scenes of animal suffering are genuinely sad. But as a family read-aloud or a first real novel, it remains one of the best ever written.
