Brrr!

Kes Gray poses a magnificently silly question: what if the dinosaurs didn't go extinct — they just got too cold? As the Ice Age arrives, the dinosaurs need woolly jumpers, and the search for warmth escalates into gloriously absurd territory involving outer space. Nick East's illustrations are expressive and vibrant, carrying the physical comedy that the spare text sets up. Gray, who created the beloved Oi Frog series, knows exactly how to make young children laugh, and this book lands those laughs consistently. The honest caveat is that the premise is the whole book — there isn't much narrative beneath the comedic escalation, and the humor depends heavily on the illustrations doing their job. For family read-aloud with dinosaur-obsessed three-to-six-year-olds, though, it's a dependable crowd-pleaser with no content concerns whatsoever.
