Bully

Bully by Jennifer Sattler takes on the anti-bullying theme with a light touch that actually works. The story features a bullfrog named Bully who decides the pond's lily pads belong to him alone, drives out all the other creatures, and then watches the ecosystem suffer as a result. The bee eventually organizes the displaced animals to reclaim what they lost together. Kirkus praised how Sattler 'masterfully shows young readers that standing up together can make all the difference,' and the nature-world setting gives the book a secondary ecological layer that adds meaning without complicating the message. The graphite-and-watercolor illustrations are expressive and carry the humor well. The honest caveat is that the resolution moves quickly — the bullfrog's change of heart happens in a hurry, and children dealing with serious real-world bullying may find the tidy ending insufficient. But as a gentle, engaging first conversation-starter about exclusion and collective courage, this is well done.
