Cynthia Rylant at her quietest is still Cynthia Rylant at her best. This lyrical picture book follows a young girl through a rural Christmas rich in handmade ornaments, family arrivals, and — notably for faith-friendly families — Christmas Eve and Christmas Day church services treated as joyful, natural parts of the celebration rather than afterthoughts. Diane Goode's loose watercolor-and-ink illustrations give every page a cheery, lived-in warmth that matches Rylant's voice. Kirkus praised the tenderness of the narration, and it's easy to see why.
