Clueless

The core message — celebrate your friends for who they are — translates cleanly into picture book form and Burns's illustrations capture the film's colorful energy. What doesn't translate is the wit, the cultural specificity, and the actual story, which gets stripped down to a thin friendship sketch. Young children who have never seen the film will get a pleasant but slight read; adult fans of the original may find it too bare. Sweet but insubstantial.
