Laurence Pringle is one of the most trusted names in children's nature writing, and this 2003 picture book is a fine example of why. Over a complete 24-hour cycle, he walks readers from foggy dawn at the coast through the afternoon's tidal-pool exposure and into the quiet nighttime world beneath the waves, where lobsters and bluefish hunt in the dark. The prose is genuinely poetic — this is a book that reads beautifully aloud. Michael Chesworth's watercolors handle both the bustle of a beach afternoon and the hush of the deep with equal charm. The one real caveat for educators is the absence of back matter: no glossary, index, or further-reading section. As a lyrical meditation on coastal creation to share before a beach trip or open an ecology unit, it's a lovely pick.
