Commander Toad in Space

Jane Yolen · 1980
91/100
👍 Worth It

Jane Yolen's Commander Toad leads the crew of the Star Warts on a mission to a water planet where a monster rises from the deep — and the crew defeats it not with weapons but with riddles, songs, and an inflatable lily pad. The Star Wars parody is warm and affectionate rather than mean-spirited, and the humor holds up even when young readers don't catch every reference. It won the Garden State Children's Book Award, earned a Junior Literary Guild selection, and appeared on Reading Rainbow; the full series won Golden Duck Awards for children's science fiction. Kirkus was cool on it at publication, calling the humor thin, and that is the honest caveat — the jokes are gentle rather than sharp, and children unfamiliar with Star Wars may miss the premise entirely. For transitional readers at the four-to-eight range, though, it has earned its four-decade classroom life.
