Phyllis Limbacher Tildes made a smart structural choice in her debut: rather than counting abstract objects, she counts cat anatomy — ears, claws, teeth — and uses a calico mother and her seven kittens as both the counting characters and the subject of the supplementary facts. The mouse narrator Willy Whiskers adds gentle humor without turning the book silly. The dual-level text is the real strength: large type carries the counting for the youngest readers while smaller captions deliver genuinely interesting cat facts for older children and curious adults reading aloud. The Free Library's reviewer noted it appeals across a range of ages for exactly this reason. The soft crayon illustration style is warm and gentle rather than vivid, which fits the cozy domestic subject even if it doesn't pop off the shelf. A quiet, well-crafted picture book that holds up.
