Danny and the Dinosaur Book and CD

Syd Hoff's Danny and the Dinosaur has been charming beginning readers since 1958, and this Book and CD edition gives it new life as a read-along tool. A boy visits a museum, befriends a dinosaur, and the two spend a perfectly simple, joyful day together in the city. The vocabulary is genuinely decodable for phonics-stage readers, and Hoff's warm illustrations do a lot of the storytelling work. The read-along CD is a real asset for classrooms and home learners — though be aware that CD players are harder to come by these days. The plot is thin by modern picture-book standards, but that is also the point: this is a stepping-stone book, not a page-turner. For a child just learning to read independently, it is exactly the right kind of encouragement.
