Dear Zoo

Rod Campbell · 2007
82/100
👍 Worth It

A child writes to the zoo asking for a pet, and the zoo keeps sending animals that don't quite work — too big, too tall, too fierce, too grumpy, too scary, too naughty — until the perfect one finally arrives. Rod Campbell's lift-the-flap format has made this a fixture of early childhood reading since 1982, and for good reason: the repetitive structure builds language patterns, the flaps are satisfying for little hands, and the simple adjectives teach vocabulary naturally in context. Over two million copies sold is not an accident. The honest caveat is that there is essentially no story here beyond the pattern — children above age five will get nothing new from it, and even at its best it is a language exercise rather than a narrative. For babies through preschoolers, though, it remains one of the best examples of its kind.
