Belka and Strelka's story is genuinely extraordinary — two stray Moscow dogs who orbited Earth and came home — and Southgate and Deppe found exactly the right tone: warm and celebratory without glossing over the fact that earlier dogs did not make it back. The Soviet Constructivist illustration style is visually unlike almost anything else in picture books right now. A standout for STEM shelves and story time alike.
