Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

Mo Willems built something close to a small masterpiece for preschoolers here. The pigeon pleads, bargains, philosophizes, and eventually throws a spectacular tantrum — and children get to shout back at every step. The format transforms a picture book into a live performance, and the read-aloud energy is unlike almost anything else in the genre. The Caldecott Honor is well earned. The honest caveat is minor: this book is best with an adult reader driving the experience; it loses some of its magic as a solo read. And Willems is clearly teaching boundaries through comedy, but a few parents worry about kids identifying with the tantrum rather than learning from its failure. In practice, most children understand the joke completely. A genuine classic.
