Dragonheart

Charles Edward Pogue wrote the screenplay for the 1996 film, so this novelization comes with an unusually authoritative hand — and he uses the format to go considerably deeper than the movie could. Bowen, Draco, and Kara all receive fuller interior lives, and scenes that did not make the final cut add texture and context for fans. The themes of honor, betrayal, and redemption that made the film resonate translate well to the page, and Draco in particular benefits from the prose treatment. The honest caveats: readers unfamiliar with the film lose some of the world-building context the movie established visually, and the villain Einon can feel cartoonishly cruel. For family audiences who loved the film or fantasy readers looking for a redemption-centered adventure, this delivers more than most movie tie-ins manage. Worth it.
