Early Winter's Orb
The third entry in the Knightscares series pitches itself squarely at reluctant middle-grade readers who might find bigger fantasy doorstoppers intimidating, and on that front it delivers. Emily, Leland, and Daniel's quest to destroy the Winter Orb and save the land from endless cold moves fast, packs in dragons, centaurs, witches, and griffins, and keeps the stakes clear. It is unambiguously derivative of established fantasy traditions, and readers who already love Tolkien or Pratchett may find it thin. But for an eight- or ten-year-old who hasn't yet found their way into fantasy fiction, this kind of kinetic, creature-filled adventure can be a real gateway. Mild fantasy violence fits the genre norm. Clean and appropriate for its age range.
