Elements of Language

Elements of Language from Holt, Rinehart and Winston is a comprehensive grades 6–12 English language arts curriculum, and its standout distinction is real: it was the first major ELA textbook series to fully integrate media literacy throughout, guided by Renée Hobbs's scholarship. Grammar, writing mechanics, and critical analysis of media all sit side by side. For classroom teachers or homeschool parents looking for a structured, scope-and-sequence grammar curriculum, the Second Course (grade 8) edition in particular is well-organized and thorough. The caveat is straightforward: this is an instructional textbook, not a trade book — there's no narrative pull, the format is dense, and 2000-era media references show their age.
