Elements of Literature
The Holt Elements of Literature series became a workhorse of American secondary English classrooms through the late 1990s and 2000s, and with good reason: it covers grades six through twelve with canonical and contemporary selections, writing instruction, vocabulary development, and extensive teacher support. Robert Probst's editorial hand kept the literary standards high across all seven course levels. Families using this for homeschool should preview individual selections, as a secular public-school anthology includes some mature literary themes appropriate to grade level but not pre-screened for faith-based contexts. The 1997 edition is also now significantly behind current diversity and representation expectations in ELA curricula. As a foundational literary education resource with broad selections and solid scaffolding, though, it still earns its place on the shelf.
