For a 2001 classroom reader, this Scholastic True Book does what it sets out to do — simple vocabulary, a glossary, and an index make it a serviceable research tool for second-graders. The problem is the age of the data: specific species figures and conservation statistics from more than two decades ago can actively mislead young researchers. It works as a gentle introduction to why animals need protecting, but teachers should pair it with current sources.
