Children's ✦ Penny’s Take

Fairytales by Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen · 2019
78/100
👍 Worth It

Andersen's tales are among the most durable things ever written for children — morally rich, imaginatively vast, and still fully alive a hundred and fifty years on. The ambiguity of which 2019 edition this is matters: a TASCHEN edition with Kay Nielsen's illustrations is a treasure; a generic bargain reprint with a poor translation is considerably less so. Seek out an edition with a named, respected translator and quality illustration before buying.
