The animal-as-history-hook is a smart concept for young readers, and the photographs are genuinely engaging for the early elementary crowd. The problem is that this title barely registers as an individual book — it is primarily a cog in a series machine, with little independent critical attention and content light enough that curious readers will exhaust it quickly.
