The mystery-plus-animal-facts format is well-designed for the early chapter book reader, and the clever-goat resolution is satisfying without being condescending. The nonfiction sidebars are woven in naturally rather than dropped in as afterthoughts. It is a thin plot, but thin is exactly right for the 6-to-10 set building chapter book stamina — this does its job well.
