Frances's mutual-bargain friendship story with Polly is relatable and the portrayal of fourth-grade social life feels authentic, including some honest texture around family finances and divorce. The problem is that this early-nineties chapter book has essentially no critical profile and limited contemporary visibility — it's hard to recommend over better-known titles in the same space.
